Default Thinking about buying this game, a few questions

Hey all! I'm wondering whether to buy this game, as well as GW2 when that comes out. I do have a few questions...

1.) Is the PvP balanced? I know there never is 100% balanced, but are some proffesions just Win/Win?
I also saw a mode (i think it was for GW 1) where you get levelled to max level and basicly get put into teams. Is this true and are the teams fair?

2.) I heard somewhere that your name in guild wars 1 is reserved for you in guild wars 2. Is this true and would it work just with the trail version?

Thank you for your time.

I'll answer the easy one first. I'm not up on PvP.

#2 - They have told us that character names will be reserved. There has been no explanation of the method, but we believe it will be through tying the accounts together via NCSoft. And, NO, it will NOT work with the trial.

1. The staff tries to keep PVP balanced through regular skill nerfs, unlike other games out there, but users always seem to find some overpowered builds. In PVP, you start off with the max level (20) and max armor for your class. Most arenas are random and sort you into teams accordingly.
2. Your name is only saved if one of your characters have invested in your Hall of Monuments, which requires Eye of the North. You can only buy Eye of the North if you own one of the campaigns. So, no. Trial characters won't have their name saved.

PvP is balanced yes, maybe even too much balanced. A lot of people have left PvP and though still active it is struggling atm cause of a lack of active people. However, there are always some profession better at PvP then others, but Anet is pretty quick in nerfing those (compared with other games).

The good side is that you can create PvP only characters that start at lvl 20 and has access to all skills and equipment unlocked on your account. You unlock them by getting the weapon upgrade/armor upgrade/skill in PvE or getting balthasar points (those are rewarded in all PvP formats). So for experienced players it only takes a few minutes to create a totally new character for PvP thats fully modded with all the needed gear and skills you want.

It is announced that you can keep your GW1 name for GW2 but the process isn't clear yet. Linking your acount to your HoM (you need EoTN for that) is likely, but not sure afaik. but im pretty sure a trial account won't be enough.

Can I play my original Guild Wars character in Guild Wars 2?

Guild Wars 2 is a whole new game with different professions and races, new technology, and expanded gameplay. It is not possible to directly use an original Guild Wars character.

However, your original Guild Wars character names will be reserved for your use in Guild Wars 2. The Hall of Monuments in Guild Wars 2 recognizes the accomplishments commemorated by your original Guild Wars characters and provides you with unique rewards to showcase those achievements.

From reading what they have had posted on the FAQ for along time now it would mean in order to reserve your name you need to have been able to access the HoM so you would need EotN to reserve you characters name would be the assumption most of come up with.

1- I consider myself on par of a 10yr old against a seasoned pro (it seems) when playing PvP, I don't win many matches but yet I really only do pve. That being said there are really little issues in PvP. As things have happened in the past, players would abuse a skill but it would soon be fixed. There are really no gimmick ways to win PvP anymore and therefore you need raw skill to win ie it's pretty balanced I would say

2- yea. You make the character, you got a reserved spot for that name in gw2

PvP whatever else one may say is more fun for me in this game than in any I have ever played. I really stink at PvP, but it is still fun.

All of the characters are carefully balanced so that Mesmers can either kill or seriously inconvenience any other class between themselves and the far horizon! Except for Necromancers, Assassins, other Mesmers, Warriors, Dervishes, and of course monks. And all classes are like that. Keeps everyone on their toes. No class is Win Win, but you will find that some classes suit your play style better than others.

GW has a good "Observer" mode where you can watch high end PvP matches and pick up a lot of good tips on your chosen class by doing so.

You can roll a level 20 PvP only character from the beginning. The skill set will only be basic, but you earn faction that you can use to buy skills and other goodies for your PvP character.

Low end PvP is anonymous, you just go into an area and press an Enter Battle button. You will be inserted into a team which will have a variety of classes, but is not always what you would have wanted.

Higher levels of PvP use teams chosen by players. Your reputation begins to matter here, while in lower end PvP nobody really cares.

If you do decide to play, make up a good long complex 14 character password. Google Guild Wars Command Line Options to see how to make it possible to boot straight into the game by double clicking on the game option, avoiding the complex login. And make sure you keep a record of your game serial number and at least one Character Name.

Thanks for the replies! I'm suprised about how they nerf things quickly. So, I'm looking at buying the Guild wars Trilogy for ??19.99, but that doesn't include eye of the north...

Do I also have to buy that seperate to reserve my name?

Hi there, as it seems you are UK re ?? have a look for Complete Collection, that includes Eye of the North.

You need Eye for the Hall of Monuments to put your titles ect in ,
and to reserve your name also.

So have a look at Amazon..play.com... Game ect on the web for the best deals

and compare the collection to the trilogy and eye of the north if buying seperate

Ok, I'm looking at the trilogy for around ??14.99-??18.99, which is really good. I can then buy Eye of the North for about ??5, which is great!

One question though, if I start the trail, buy the game and use the same account/character, will that affect me in any way? In another MMO, i had a free trial and then upgraded, yet in the expansions it still said trial. It doesn't physically effect me, but I was a bit annoyed.

Hi there,

Once you have purchased Trilogy and ( Eye of the north the only expansion)

Go to your Login screen and below your name once entered you will see

ADD a new Key add it there and you will be prompted along the way.
this will add Trilogy to your name and any chars you have made in the trial will remain.

Once done then you do the same again add a new key again below your name at login screen now add eye of the north key.

Now at login sceen you have the option to select pve or pvp if you choose PVE you will then have 3 options either to create a char in any of the chosen starting areas.

Have a look at our campfire section to pick up a few tips on what professions

as proph ,nfall and factions have the 6 core professions...the diference is ..in Factions you have a Ritulist and an assasin you can make and nightfall you have a Dervish or a Paragon..along with the 6 core

Good luck and enjoy GW

As far as i understand it, gw1 and gw2 will be linked via a hall of monuments (which is part of eye of the north, so yes, you need to buy that too), but to obtain a HoM you need to have at least 1 PvE character...

So, I'll try the trial, I'll create a pvp character and a pve character. If I choose to buy the trilogy and eyes of the north, if I look at my account history would it say "Guild wars Trilogy trial"? Or would my account completely forget I had a trial and look normal?

The game will look normal by all means. If you look in the game client, (from the character list, click "Edit Account" -> "Manage Access Keys" -> Next), it probably doesn't say "Trilogy". It lists all the campaigns, addons and additional features that are added to the account. The 3 main campaigns are listed, if you bought Trilogy. The trial key is listed as "expired" under the additional features.

Nothing to worry about. I started out with a Nightfall trial 4 years ago. It is still listed there. The nice feature is, you are able to continue with your trial characters as regular characters with a retail key. You don't need to abandon these first hours of your Guild Wars experience.

I started a trail, it's a shame I can't play pvp, but the game seems good so far.
